Mistakes to Avoid

Things that catch people out. Read these before you go.

Don't arrive at Maya after 4 PM

The last public boat to Malapascua leaves around 5 PM. If you arrive at Maya Port after 4 PM, you risk having no boat. A private charter after dark costs ₱2,000-3,000 and most boatmen won't go if the sea is rough.

Bring cash from Cebu

There are ATMs on Malapascua and they are generally quite reliable but power/internet outages occur multiple times per month on average. Some resorts accept cards (subject to internet), but many places on the island are cash-only. Bring more than you think you need.

Buses say "Maya" not "Malapascua"

At the North Bus Terminal, look for buses signed to "Maya" — they do not say "Malapascua." Tell the conductor you are going to Maya Port for the Malapascua boat. They will let you know when to get off.

Boats don't run in bad weather

During storms or rough seas (especially June-November), boats may be cancelled. Have a backup plan: there are basic lodges near Maya Port. Check weather before heading north. If the coast guard suspends sailings, there is no way across.

Know the prices before you go

Some drivers and touts at the airport or Maya Port will quote inflated prices to tourists. The bus is ₱350, not ₱500. The boat is ₱100-200, not ₱500. Knowing what things cost puts you in control.

Night flights need a Maya overnight

If your flight lands after 2 PM, you probably won't make it to Maya in time for the last boat. Plan to stay near the bus terminal or in Cebu City and head north first thing in the morning. Early buses to Maya leave around 4-5 AM.
